Week 2: Model Making Exercise

Thursday’s class was amazing! Not only did Rachel bring in some amazing brownies that we got to eat, but I also got to get back into model making which I hadn’t realised how much I missed. We did a quick exercise which included making 6 random pairs of words from our intuitive maps and making models in response to the word pairs. Below are my the models I made.

This exercise motivated me to start making my documents for Part 1 of this assessment. Below are some of the documents I created this week.

ABOVE: I expressed the structured lines and intersections of the space through the folds on a piece of paper.

ABOVE: This is a 3D iteration of DOCUMENT 1.
  • DOCUMENT 3
ABOVE: I found some textured paper with my materials and experimented with a pencil rubbing to bring out the perpendicular line work of the texture. These lines iterate the ideas of intersection and crossing over in DOCUMENTS 1 and 2.
  • DOCUMENT 4
ABOVE: This document represents the movement of pedestrians across the crossing. The watercolour lines show the structured yet organic movement of people and the black line work is a contrast to this showing the structure of the space. I chose the red and green as representations of the light signal to allow people to cross and wait.

ABOVE: These two documents are abstract sections showing the markers an movements of the space.
5A shows the view from the sidewalk looking across the road. The structured horizontal lines show the movement of the cars and the scattered dots show the movement of the pedestrians – majority within the markers of the lights but some expanding their boundaries.
5B shows the section view from the perspective of a diver in a car at the lights. The methodical dots are to show the movement of the cars and the organic, freehand lines show the movement of pedestrians crossing the road.

ABOVE: This document is an iteration of the model NEGOTIATION + UNSPOKEN RULES from the model making exercise. It represents the movement of a pedestrian over a period of time across the road, passing the island in the middle. The line work depicts the movement of a pedestrians gaze as they cross the road when the signal is still red and cars are free to pass by.

ABOVE: This document explores the type of people that collect and cross the road together. The merging and vibrant colours express the range and diversity of people that come together in the space and the lines show the structure of the space, giving the document context.
