Week 3: Casual Critiques

This week we discussed what makes a good/useful critique and how to approach feedback. We then were split into groups and discussed critiques and gave each other feedback on our documents so far. I got a lot of positive feedback and support for my ideas and style of documentation and was also given some good ideas to explore through my future documentation. Some of the suggestions included that I look into the change in behaviour of pedestrians with and without cars around and observe and interpret from a driver’s perspective.

Below are some of the documents I have completed.

ABOVE: These documents are iterations of my model from the model making exercise that represented SIGNALS (SOCIAL/AUDIO/VISUAL) + MERGING MOVEMENT.
8A shows the merging movement through structured line work.
8B shows the merging movement of pedestrians from opposite sides of the street through organic line work.
  • DOCUMENT 9
ABOVE: I have begun to notice the common theme in my work of structured line work and conformity. This document explores this through the straight strips and their attachment to the wire allows organic flow and form of the image.

ABOVE: I wanted to explore another idea and observation I made at my site to allow me to gain a broader understanding. I decided to explore the idea of subconscious and consciousness. Although difficult to understand through the picture, this document explores the idea of subconscious through the foggy and distorting plastic film.

ABOVE: This document is a combined iteration of DOCUMENT 10 and DOCUMENT 4. It is made from a piece of card with structured line work with four separate layers of plastic film folded over the top.

ABOVE: This is an iteration of DOCUMENT 11. It expresses layers of line work and intersection on four separate layers of plastic film that I have bound together with thin nylon thread and a needle.

ABOVE: This document is an iteration of DOCUMENT 13. It expresses the idea of structure, line work and intersection through pen on the film and folding.
  • DOCUMENT 14
ABOVE: This document is a further iteration of DOCUMENT 13. I explored what I did in the previous document but with perpendicular lines.
  • DOCUMENT 15
ABOVE: This document is an iteration of DOCUMENT 10 and DOCUMENT 1. Although not shown very well in the photo, this document uses the plastic film to explore structure and intersection through fold lines and the reflection of light.
  • DOCUMENT 16
ABOVE: With this document I have tried to explore the structure and markers of the space – the only regular consistencies that make the space recognizable to its title.
